OKLAHOMA STATE MEET

Deer Creek Boys, Jenks Girls Win Class 6A Titles

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Senior Payton Hinkle of Broken Arrow withstood challenges from Bixby senior Cayden Dawson and Jenks senior Avery Mazzei, but defended her Class 6A state title by running 17:56.7 for 5,000 meters at Edmond Santa Fe.

The win was Hinkle's third at the Oklahoma state cross country championships and cemented her as one of the best in state history.

Dawson, who won the Chile Pepper Festival title, was second in 18:06.0 and Mazzei was third in 18:09.2.

Mazzei and her twin sister Deborah, who was eighth, helped lift Jenks to the team championship with 56 points. It was a bit of redemption for Jenks, which had a runner penalized for impeding in the 2020 championships and bumped the team from first to third.

AJ Antonelli and Deer Creek (Edmond) controlled the 6A boys race. Antonelli, the state's top runner, covered the state meet course in 15:14.8. He led the Antlers, who put five scorers in the top 15, to the team title (44 points).  All five finished between 15:14 and 16:19.

Bishop Kelley's girls retained the 5A crown, putting up 54 points and holding off Piedmont (61). Freshman Gwyneth Meyers of Bishop Kelley won the race in 19:00.8.

The Guymon boys edged Piedmont 58 to 67 for team title. Terrance Allen from Carl Albert, a sophomore, won the 5A race in 16:10.9.

Madi Surber of Tuttle won the 3,200-meter race for girls in Class 4A in 12:01.8. Cascia Hall took the team honors with 76 points.

Cache won the 4A boys title with three in the top 10 on the way to 70 points. Lincoln Christian took second on a tiebreaker over Oklahoma Christian after both scored 79. Ryan McLaughlin of Harding Charter won the 4A race in 15:42.0.

Meeker duo Riley Randall and Braxton Bussell went 1-2 in the 3A boys race (16:28.4/16:39.7), but there was not enough support and the team finished seventh. Marlow was the steadiest through five and won with 122 points.

Likewise, in the 3A girls race, Kaylie Washko and Katie Bosley, teammates at Oklahoma Christian, went 1-2 (11:54.8/12:14.4.). But Regent Prep defended its team title with 127 points.

Erik Franco of Santa Fe South Pathways won the 2A race in 16:20.5. Timberlake took the team win.

The Hooker girls scored 44 points to hold off Boise City (64). Kamryn Baggs from Laverne ran 12:06.9 to win the 2A final.
